If you search for a way to remove silences, you will run into roughly four kinds of tools: free editors, professional audio workstations, cloud AI platforms billed monthly, and small dedicated apps such as VoxCut. This comparison is based on each vendor’s own documentation and public pricing pages, checked on 4 October 2026. Prices are quoted in US dollars as shown on the vendors’ US pages, so what you pay in Europe, with taxes, may differ. What should you compare in a silence removal tool?

Six criteria decide most choices, and the right order depends on how you work. Specific situations are covered in how to remove silences from a podcast and removing silence from large audio files.

• Automation: does it detect and cut silences by itself, or do you mark them?
• Preview: can you check what will be cut before you commit?
• Batch work: can you process a whole folder of recordings with the same settings?
• Privacy: does the file stay on your computer or is it uploaded?
• Long files: how does it cope with multi-hour recordings?
• Cost: one-time, subscription or pay-per-hour?

Audacity: free and capable, but you set it up yourself

Audacity is free, open-source and fully local: no upload and no account. It does remove silences automatically through its Truncate Silence effect (Effect → Special → Truncate Silence). You set a threshold between −20 dB and −80 dB and a minimum duration, then either truncate each silence to a fixed length or compress it by a percentage. The dialog has a Preview button, so you can listen before you apply it.

Where it gets heavier is repeat work and very long files. Batch processing is possible through Macros (Tools → Macro Manager, then Apply Macro to Files), but you build the macro yourself. And since version 3 Audacity keeps the audio inside its project file in uncompressed form, which Audacity’s own forum puts at a little over 20 MB per minute for one stereo track at 44.1 kHz, plus extra copies while you edit. Multi-hour recordings therefore need a lot of disk space and time.

Adobe Audition: silence deletion inside a professional editor

Adobe Audition can delete silences automatically too. Its Diagnostics tools include Delete Silence and Mark Audio: you scan the file, review the silent passages it lists, then delete or mark them one by one or all at once. It is part of a full audio workstation, which is ideal if you already edit in Audition all day and more than you need if silence removal is your only task.

Audition is a subscription. As of 4 October 2026, Adobe’s US page lists the single-app plan at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, about US$276 a year.

Descript and Cleanvoice.ai: AI convenience in the cloud

Descript and Cleanvoice.ai both offer automatic silence removal driven by their cloud platforms. In Descript, the Shorten word gaps tool lets you choose which pauses count (longer than, or between two durations) and a new target length, and recent versions add a Remove silence command. Cleanvoice.ai is built around automatic clean-up of speech recordings, including silences.

The catch is the same for both: your file is processed on their servers, and the price depends on how much audio you process. As of 4 October 2026 their US pricing pages list the following.

• Descript: free plan with 60 media minutes a month and a watermark on exports; Hobbyist at US$16 a month billed annually (US$24 billed monthly) for 10 media hours a month; Creator at US$24 a month billed annually for 30 hours
• Cleanvoice.ai: free trial without a credit card; subscriptions from US$11 a month for 10 hours of audio, US$28 for 30 hours and US$90 for 100 hours (monthly billing); pay-as-you-go credits from US$11 for 5 hours
• Privacy: cloud, files are uploaded for processing
• Long files: limited by the hours included in your plan

Where does VoxCut fit?

VoxCut sits between free but hands-on and automatic but cloud-based. It detects silences automatically from a threshold and a minimum duration, and shows a before/after waveform so you can see what will be cut before you export. Processing runs locally as a streaming pass based on FFmpeg, which is why a single 72-hour, 5 GB file was processed in under six minutes on consumer hardware, and nothing is sent anywhere.

It is not the answer to everything. VoxCut does nothing but silence removal: there is no transcript editing, no multitrack mixing and no AI voice. The free version processes files in full up to 10 minutes each and offers a partial export beyond that; Pro is a one-time purchase on Windows and Linux (€39 at the V2 launch price, €59 afterwards), with a separate Android app.
